Chapter Twenty-One

“Impossible,” Nightmare said, her voice echoing through the vast, shimmering throne room. The walls seemed to shift and ripple like water, reflecting countless dreams and nightmares.

Dream, smooth and serene, even a little smile, said, “Apparently not. Well done, librarian. You shall have your dream.”

“He must die,” Nightmare hissed, eyes blazing with dark fire. “We cannot let him live. He is a threat. He has defeated our Minotaur. No one can know this.”

“We gave our word,” Dream countered, her voice like soft silk.

“He is a threat.”

“I will be of use to you later,” I said. “You’ll see.”

“We will give you your dream,” Dream said.

“Very well,” Nightmare said. “But you will see. He will be a problem for us.”

The Dream I Asked For: I rode the dragon, scales glittering like polished obsidian, wings spread wide, flapping; behind me was a turbulent orange sky. I landed the dragon in a city square. I spoke from the dragon to the assembled crowd.

“The battle to end all battles is near. We cannot turn away. Heaven and hell will battle for rule. Who will they rule? Us. You understand, whatever side you are on, we will, in the end, serve the angels of heaven or the angels of hell. Prepare yourself. The end is coming. I cannot say what will come after.”

I rode the dragon on to the next city. I gave the same short speech in city after city. As the dream faded, I felt a weight of my announcement settle on my shoulders. Once, I had thought maybe I could stop Armageddon, but now I knew the truth. It was inevitable. But was the ending inevitable?

The queen’s eyes, both dream and nightmare, bore into me. “You are full of surprises, Mortal. But you will not save your kind. They are meant to serve.”

“We’ll see,” I said.

Nightmare laughed, a sound like breaking glass. Dream gave me a faint enigmatic, smile. Her smile like a wrapped gift.

I woke with a start in Rip’s guest room, my heart pounding. Sunlight streamed through the window, a stark contrast to the ethereal dreamscape I’d just left. Fluffy, ever-present, climbed off the pillow and greeted me with a series of licks and affectionate rubs. His playful growl, more like a squeak, made me smile.

After a shower and a change of clothes, I took Fluffy for our morning walk along the stream. The water burbled cheerfully, at odds with the weight of my thoughts. Suddenly, a fish jumped out of the water, its scales flashing in the sunlight.

“You can’t save everybody,” it said, before falling back into the stream and being carried down the mountain.

“I know that,” I shouted to the fish.

Another fish, or perhaps the same one who had swum back upstream, jumped out of the water and shouted, “Then act like it.”

I shook my head, wondering if I was still dreaming. What was real and what was not was becoming harder for me to be sure of. Not that this was the first fish that had ever shouted at me from that stream.
